This elegant subterranean pool and leisure area is located in a large double basement development in the rear garden of a £5.8 million luxury remodelling of a family home just around the corner from trendy Abbey Road Studios, London NW8. In addition to the swimming pool, the wellness area includes a fully air conditioned gym, steam room, lounging/yoga space and changing facilities, all finished in shades of sand to harmonise with the understated colour palette of the rest of the property. The area is directly connected to the lower ground floor of the main house by means of a spectacular designer glass staircase which complements the glass mosaic tiles of the interior of the pool. The spiral stairway provides a beautiful focal point as well as an abundant source of natural light which enters via the opening from the glazed atrium above. Ambient lighting in the space is streamed from inside recesses within the ceiling. The client brief was to install the largest pool that could comfortably sit within the area, something that we always recommend as it rapidly beocmes a much used and loved feature of the house and therefore its dimensions were set at 9x4 metres. The lovely Italian glass mosaic tiles presented a precision fixing challenge in that they are transparent with any imperfections behind showing through and the thickness of 10mm required them to be drilled as opposed to cut when matching up around fittings. The LED lights and fixtures are 316 grade stainless steel and offer an attractive contrast to the earth colours and materials used elsewhere. To accommodate vigorous excercise, the client also specificed a counter current unit at one end of the pool - a powerful jet against which you can swim on the spot like an in-water treadmill. The pool part of the project took a year which included a lengthy design and testing process of some special features. The architect intoduced the stylish stainless steel water line detail for which several mock-ups in aluminium were required in order to achieve the exact measurements before the final template could be created for the costly stainless steel fabrication. The pit which houses the automatic pool cover when it is rolled back is hidden behind a suspended wall above the water line and a concrete wall below the waterline separated by a 100mm slot for the cover to slide through. The swimming pool and plantroom look very neat and simple but is the result of complex planning, high dimension accuracy and demanding team work.

These two symmetrical hydrotherapy pools - one hot and cold - are part of a unique outdoor leisure area in fashionable London W11. The architect heading up the re-modelling of the entire Victorian villa, Johnny Holland, came up with the interesting concept and we were thrilled to be apppointed to provide the design and engineering expertise to make the twin pools a reality. The highly complex specification, in particlar the technology servicing the extensive features of the hot pool, required two plantrooms, one on the ground floor in the new Classical pavilion, and another downstairs next to the subterranean gym and spa which extend underneath the whole terrace area. There are eight massage jets in the hot pool, including a cascading jet for back and shoulder muscles as well as a circular mat in the floor for foot massage. In the cold pool, the depth and full width underwater steps allow for the bather to to wade in and out and remain standing to cool down. The stylish, cleverly thought installations located at the end of the splendid garden created by Butter Wakefield, offer the benefits of different temperature water and hydrotherapy in one place, accommodating for relaxing, recuperating and entertaining even on the greyest of Autumn days and colderst of New Years Eves.

Refurbishments are such satisfying projects, in particular when it comes to pools used for rehabilitation of post-operative and injured people and the less able bodied as it means that the powerfully therapeutic benefits of water are once again available or improved upon. The project brief that London Swimming Pool Co Servicing Ltd received was to completely renovate the hydrotherapy pool at the renowned Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and involved replacing the old interior liner with a custom made high quality version. Our engineers had to drill through 16 inches of concrete to accommodate all the new return and suction lines necessary for the level of circulation required for a top quality, modern hydrotherapy pool. The plumbing had to be run through the ceiling of the hospital records storage room below, a space measuring only 18 inches high with the difficult part being bending pipes around existing ceiling supports. Old plant was replaced with highly efficient filters and pumps to obtain the proper turnover rate. We used glass beads media instead of sand as they provide superior filtration and last longer. The lovely, shiny facility which will aid healing and relieve pain played a starring role in the tour of the new treatment centre during the Hospital Open Day on 11th May inaugurated by Maureen Lipman.

Sometimes it is better to start all over again and this pool complex is a perfect example of this. The original pool at this private estate in SW19 was built in the 1970s and had to be closed in 2008 on safety grounds as it was in very poor condition. The extensive refurbishment turned into a complete re-build as the pool shell needed to be re-aligned and re-enforced and the pool hall extended to accommodate a bigger plantroom. The new high tech equipment provides not just great water and air quality for users but also minimum maintenance and peace of mind in connection with the stringent requirements of the HSE for public pools which this installation needs to comply with. The fresh, bright pool and surround finishes along with the new arched wooden ceiling featuring eight skylights have turned the area into a very inviting place to be with the added therapeutic benefits of a sauna. Before the renovation, only a handful of the residents used the facility and now 3/4 of the 40 households enjoy the pool several times a week. Not only do the residents appreciate the improvement to their lifestyles but also the increase in the value of their properties which the dramatically transformed amenity provides. The Head of the pool committee adds "The project has definitely brought the community of the estate closer together. Our first pool party was held over the Jubilee weekend and over 50 residents - family and friends - celebrated the pool".

We were appointed to completely rebuild this outdoor pool overlooked by a magnificent riverside Palladian influenced residence in the Royal Borough of Richmond. With a new shell and surround, plant and pipework, finishes and lights, fixtures and fittings the pool now looks like a dark gemstone set amongst the lush hanging Willow trees in the tranquil manicured gardens on the banks of the Thames. The first three photos show the finished renovation, the fourth photo shows the pool before the works and the last two photos show the re-rendering.

This very large hydrotherapy complex is the extremely successful culmination of 7 years planning and fundraising by the SNAP charity set up by the Rotary Club in Chippenham, Wiltshire to make this dream project come true for St Nicholas - a local specialist school for cognition and learning. We were very proud to be selected as the swimming pool specialists by Bailey Partnership, the project managers. The facility has been designed to allow people with disabilities and special needs enjoy the experience and benefits of water. The pool features the very latest technology such as an in-water interactive multi-sensory system and Ultra-Violet water treatment accommodating those with allergies and breathing difficulties. A solar panel heating system provides a large amount of the energy required to keep the pool at a constant 34 degrees Celsius and greatly reduces the carbon footprint. A mechanical hoist enables pool access for less able-bodied and specialist designed steps assist partially sighted users. The pool cover was custom made to suit the unusual shape of the pool and supplied by Plastica. The complex is separate to the main school building allowing the community to easily use the pool - currently there are 15 external groups benefitting from the fantastic facilities. More can be accommodated and if you are interested in hiring the pool please contact Nancy Tucker, Premises Manager on email stnicholasschool09@googlemail.com. The pool is already changing the lives of many people and if you would like to support the ongoing maintenance or in other ways get involved, then please aslo get in touch with Nancy Tucker as well.

We are proud to have been commissioned to build the "first ever" pool, including a spa, in the Cancer Research UK garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Gold was awarded in association with designer and TV presenter Andy Sturgeon. The project was also awarded SPATA Gold 2008 for Best Non-traditional Pool Installation. It was a unique and innovative first ever construction technique which was accomplished within an incredibly tight deadline of two weeks, making it official that we are capable of just about anything when it comes to pool design and build. The quality mosaic tiles for the interior finish were provided by Waxmans and the system control panel by Electair Ltd, making the project so much easier to complete. Supporting the invaluable work of Cancer Research UK fits in with the corporate ethos and business of London Swimming Pool Company as a whole - building stunning swimming pools and spas for healthly leisure and living. This minimalist design pool perfectly complements the contemporary interior of this newly rebuilt Chelsea residence. The overall emphasis has been on light, with natural daylight entering from atria on both ends of the pool and specialist halogen lighting througout the area, including the effect of mirrors, to the extent that this underground space does not feel subterranean whatsoever. The inside of the pool has been made interesting with the creation of various levels and the whole area comes alive with the contrasting textures of large white porcelain tiles, teak wood and the dry bonded black slate wall.

This swimming pool is truly an avant-garde project in many respects and it won two SPATA awards immediately on completion - one for the new category of Innovation and the other in the highest value projects. The client brief included a pool and building which were contextual and would be bright even on a dull day, have good acoustics and a strong connection with the outside as well as exude a feeling of calm. The extraordinary end result was achieved with unique materials and innovative technology. Fully opening glazed sections disappear into the walls completely linking the gardens with the inside and giving the illusion that parts of the building have no means of support. Linear slots in natural stone for water and air make the air handling system invisible and totally silent. The pool project has already been submitted for a number of architectural awards. The wonderful photos were taken by Fernando Guerra, FG+SG.

This elegant indoor pool complex was constructed below the property with the help of deep piling to support the main house during the build. The facilities include a sunken spa and sauna for the complete wellness-at-home experience. The full length glazing of the pool hall allows for a spectacular view over South-West London from inside the pool and all the glass and a circular atrium permits maximum natural light to enter the leisure area creating a peaceful ambience. This tired and damaged outdoor pool underwent an amazing transformation along with the landscaping at this beautiful property in the Wimbledon area. The brief was to create the look and feel of a natural pool in a woodland and this was achieved by keeping the trees around the pool and choosing shades of cream and sand for the glass mosaic interior finishes resulting in the pool water appearing a clear, light green colour similar to that of a pond. The Sawn York Stone paving and sandstone coping stones add to the earthy theme and the splendid surrounding flower beds complete the tranquil scene perfectly. Refurbishments are such satisfying work, in particular this old and sub-standard pool and spa area underwent an amazing transformation into a beautiful and serene space where you now want to spend hours and hours. The project entailed the complete overhaul of a 4,000 square feet triplex and pool to complement the quality of design and high level of finish of the rest of the property. The warm but at the same time clean look was achieved by using natural stone for the floor and walls combined with black mirrors and dark stained wood panels setting off the new glass mosaic tiles in Foggy Blue in the pool. For the lighting system to enhance the zen effect, it is dimmable and fitted in recesses in the pool surround to wash down the stone strips. The project of constructing this modern high quality pool in the old redundant kitchens at Granard primary school has brought with it many rewards. The pool has not only become the pride and joy of all at Granard school, but will give everyone of its pupils a chance to become competent swimmers and certainly the ability to swim 25 meters by the end of Key Stage 2, which is a national curriculum requirement. The lengthy walk between the school and the leisure centre had previously left very little useful time in the water. The pool will also enable Granard to meet the fitness objectives of the government's Healthy Schools Programme and a facility in which to offer valuable Extended Services to the people and other schools in the community in the form of swimming lessons.
The look of the pool is pretty and fresh wiht a light blue blend ceramic mosaic tiled interior finish complemented by shiny stainless steel fittings. The Ultra-Violet water treatment system ensures superior crystal clear water quality requiring minimal chlorine and other chemicals that can irritate asthma sufferers and users with respiratory difficulties. We brought this entire old fashioned 1960s private school pool complex into the 21st century and the commission was immediately given the SPATA award for Best Refurbishment Project 2008. The comprehensive specification included adjusting the dimensions of the pool, installing electronic timing systems and scoreboard in line with FINA regulations for competition swimming. The transformation also included a complete refit of the changing rooms and shower facilities and installing a very advanced water treatment system resulting in stunning water quality.

Undertaking the refurbishment of the pool complex in 2005 at one of the finest fee paying schools in the country was a very satisfying project. The 21 metre pool built in the 70s needed to be brought up to the standard of the other fantastic sports facilities at the school. We re-tiled the whole building and of course the pool which had been covered in marbelite. The airhandling and water filtration system were replaced, new starting blocks installed and a complete changing room re-fit was carried out. The project was awarded Silver 2009 in the Commercial Refurbishment category by SPATA (after the Gold awarded to our project in Tudor Close!).

Our refurbishment of this 1960s outdoor pool was called "outstanding" in the latest issue of Pool & Spa Industry. The work carried out in 2006 entailed fitting an Extreme onsite liner and laying new coping stones finished off with smart looking fittings in stainless steel. We supplied a foam thermal heat retention blanket with timber/stainless steel storage roll. Last year Pool Cover transformed the pool further by installing a Provence High Enclosure accommodating swimming all year round but which can be completely removed when the weather is fine.

We always enjoy renovating and upgrading pools, no matter how modest in style and size and this simple primary school pool was no exception. We began by fixing a large leak in the shell, re-built the top part of the pool, and then re-rendered and re-tiled the shell as well as fitted hand rails along all sides for the comfort of complete beginners. The works took six weeks to complete during the winter term and the pool was ready for the children to enjoy again when the sun came out at Easter time.

Stunning effects were achieved when combining water, mosaic and original brickwork in the pool area at the original Cannons health club. The highly challening specification required that we build the pool underneath the railway arches of Cannon Street Station.
