The material you choose for your outdoor pool surround is one of the most important decisions you will make when constructing a pool, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality. There are three types of material from which to choose – concrete paving stones, natural stone and wood, which come in a variety of styles so, regardless of the style of landscaping in your garden, you’re sure to find a material that complements the natural environment. When choosing your pool surround, the key features to consider are non-slippery when wet, non-abrasive texture for comfort underfoot and resistance to excessive heat absorption.

Perhaps more than any other material, paving stones are chosen by pool owners primarily because of their functional benefits. Paving stones are highly durable and low maintenance, which makes them economical in the long-term. They also have a non-slippery surface which can be especially beneficial if you have young children. In terms of aesthetics, there are numerous styles and textures from which to choose so there will definitely be a material that complements the ambience of your garden.

Natural Stone
Natural stone is a very popular choice – not only is stone extremely durable, but because it creates natural friction, it is generally regarded as one of the best non-slip materials. Stone surrounds come in a range of styles and finishes, but most popular of all is flagstone. While the natural look offered by flagstones is unbeatable, this material can become warm in hot weather, which some people might find a little uncomfortable when walking on them barefoot.

Wood
Wood offers a rustic ambience, but do bear in mind that the constant interaction between water and wood can sometimes result in the wood warping. While regular maintenance and treatments can be applied to prevent these issues, many pool owners choose to upgrade to composite wood surrounds to achieve the same rustic aesthetics but without the potential problems. Composite wood surrounds are constructed from a material which resembles plastic, but in terms of appearance, it’s very difficult to tell the difference. While this material is more expensive, less maintenance is required so it actually saves money in the long-term.
