Indoor Pool with Extensive Garden View

A transparent extension was added to a late Victorian property in Surrey to house this beautiful contemporary swimming pool, giving the family the best of both worlds – an indoor pool that also affords views of two aspects of the garden. This imaginative pool design brought together experts in many fields, from Davidson Architects and LSPC’s swimming pool design & build teams to specialists in glazing, ceiling lighting and acoustics, creative tiling and much more, to give the family members exactly what they wanted.

The semi-level deck concrete pool measures 7 metres by 5 metres and is 1.5 metres deep. It is fitted with a HydroStar counter-current swim system which generates a strong current to swim against – this can be used for swimming training, improving swimming technique and therapeutic exercises. The strength of the current is controlled electronically by each bather, matching the current to the needs of each person.

Most pool installations come with some technical challenges and in this case, the construction team had to ensure that when threading the ductwork into the wall and ceiling voids they did not lose any room space (floor to ceiling) and ensure they kept the architects’ roofline under planning requirements.

The pool is tiled in Villeroy and Boch grey porcelain tiles and is fitted with an OCEA polycarbonate pool cover, a material that is extremely impact resistant and unaffected by direct ultraviolet light. The pool hall wall has a striking split tiling design – at the top are cream coloured ‘Deserto’ tiles, a wavy textured tile that resembles sand rippled by gentle winds, and below that, are oblong wood-effect ‘Classic Driftwood Light’ stone tiles by Mandarin Stone.

The glazed walls (from Keller Minimal Windows) open on both sides, allowing sunshine to stream into the pool hall in the summer and to be closed against the elements when the outdoor pool season ends. The HertFelt Linear acoustic ceiling by Hunter Douglas Architectural provides a unique appearance and incredible acoustics. The roof lantern channels natural light into the pool, creating an attractive shimmer on the water and a bright ambience.

The plant room, which stores the equipment that controls the pool's operation and ensures it performs efficiently around the clock, features a Calplas HFS filter, Badu pump, Heatstar Pheonix super plus environmental control system and heat exchanger. Water treatment is via Dryden Aqua’s DAISY+ system which uses Activated Filter Media, a bio-resistant filter material made from brown and green glass. This prevents bacterial clumping in the filter altogether, thereby extending, and improving its efficacy for years. The system has many benefits including lower chlorine consumption, chlorine odour reduction, significantly lower running costs, and crystal-clear water.

Not only did LSPC design and build the family’s dream pool, but LSPC's Servicing Division is providing regular servicing to keep the pool water in tip-top condition for all-year-round swimming.
