The Boys are Wheelie off Again!

When it comes to a cycling challenge you won’t find a more passionate team than the lads in the Contracting division at London Swimming Pool Company – eight are keen cyclists and have clocked up thousands of miles cycling for fun and charity.  They even take to their bikes to visit clients.

Peter Hales, Neil Dyer and Ryan Henry (left to right) competed in a mountain bike orienteering (MTBO) challenge, raising funds through their participation fees for Peaslake Village School in Surrey.  Peaslake is unique because it operates as a free school, yet receives no government or other official support; it relies entirely on fundraising by the school and parents.

Neil said, “The ride was great fun!  We met at my house in the Surrey Hills at 8.30am and cycled a couple of miles through the woods to the start at Peaslake Village Hall. We registered and were given an Ordnance Survey map with 20 checkpoints worth between 40 and 160 points each depending on how difficult they were to find or how remote they were.  We had to plan a route to gain as many points as possible and track our performance on an orienteering scorecard.  The MTBO is less about speed and fitness and more about planning, navigational skills and tactics.

“The weather was chilly which was perfect for riding.  We rode 22 miles in the obligatory three hours, burning around 1,300 calories each, working up an appetite for the BBQ later on!  In the time limit, we located half of the 20 checkpoints placed alongside bridleways, forestry trails and purpose made mountain bike trails, achieving a score of 745.  We finished off the day with burgers at the event BBQ then cycled four miles home, taking in some MTBO trails along the way.  A fantastic way to support a local school and notch up a few more miles on the bike.”
