You’ve just bought a home with a pool – what next?
A recent study revealed that the most desired leisure facility for luxury home buyers is a private swimming pool. Buying a property that already has a swimming pool is very popular – as well as the obvious benefits of swimming at home whenever you want, you own a property with a valuable asset. While a ready-installed pool means you don’t have the pleasure of bespoking it to your personal taste, you can start enjoying the pool straightaway; that is assuming the previous owner has left it in tip top condition!
Whether you have owned a pool at a previous property, or this is your first one, it’s important to get your pool care and maintenance off to a good start, so here are our tips for doing just that.
Get a pool servicing engineer to check your pool
Aesthetically pools may look similar, but no two pools are the same. Pools vary in terms of their building material, size, shape, location, plant room equipment, water treatment system, the frequency of use and bather load, so every pool requires specific care and attention. For example, an outdoor pool will require some different areas of maintenance to that of an indoor pool. All these factors will be taken into account when tailoring your servicing plan.
So the first step is to contact a recognised servicing company and request a site visit. The pool engineer will visit and inspect your pool and the plant room equipment thoroughly, assessing its individual requirements, and can then advise you from there. This will include a proposal for regular servicing, most likely a visit every other week, as well as easy-to-follow instructions on testing the pool water to ensure it remains healthy in between the engineer’s visits.
DIY or Specialist Servicing?
Once you have had your consultation with the pool engineer, you can then assess whether pool care is something you feel ready to carry out yourself, or if you should rely on the specialists.
Caring for the pool yourself is certainly do-able, but you have to decide if you have the time and knowledge to tackle the range of tasks involved. It’s not something to be taken on lightly; it’s a specialist job carried out by skilled engineers who not only do the run-of-the-mill tasks but take steps to prevent problems occurring with the pool water, plant and structure of the pool. The regularity of servicing– "little and often" as we always say – is what ensures that your pool is always ready for use.
Using a specialist will ensure that any little issues are dealt with immediately and risk signals are identified early, avoiding costly expenditure in the future. While equipment may look clean and shiny to the untrained eye, it may not be working optimally. Professional help will ensure everything is functioning well and safely.
Agree to a service contract
If you decide to hire professional help, be sure to have all the terms and conditions set out in a contract. This way you know exactly what services come within the regular servicing and the cost, frequency and length of visits, the company’s security and privacy practices, and who your engineer will be.
Being safe around the pool
It’s important to acquaint yourself with the basic principles of pool safety and hygiene. Any service contract you sign with servicing specialists should cover these areas, but as the pool owner, you should pay attention to these. This includes chemical levels, water temperature, use of a pool cover and general cleaning - mistakes could be detrimental to bathers. You can gain a better idea of your pool’s specific requirements by talking with the service engineer.
By making the right choices and educating yourself about pool care and maintenance, you can enjoy your new pool for years and ensure it remains an asset in the future. Finally, if you find the pool in your new home is not in the best condition (aesthetically or technically), you can always consider refurbishment to give your pool a new lease of life.
