Stunning Restoration of Damaged 40 Year Old Pool - London

Refurbishing a swimming pool that is long past its ‘use-by date’ is as exciting a design project as building a new pool. In the case of this 40-year-old freeform pool the structure had suffered from movement and cracking because it had remained empty for many years. Pools need water along with regular servicing and maintenance to preserve the integrity of the structure! London Swimming Pool Company (LSPC) was delighted to be given the task of breathing new life into a pool with quite a checkered past.

The pool refurbishment was part of a wider property refurbishment project which required a high level of coordination so that the pool refurbishment team could work ‘just-in-time’ and keep on schedule. The team worked closely with the main contractor and the pool owners to transform the damaged structure into this impressive contemporary pool. The unique shape (14m at its longest point and 7m at its widest point), profile and variable depth of the pool shell (1m-2.5m) were a challenge in terms of establishing the position of the new fittings and features.

The extensive renovation included removing the mosaic tiles, rendering the pool and installing brand new pipework. The old fittings, for example; skimmers; inlets; vacuum; main drains, and the pool lights, were replaced with stainless-steel alternatives. Instead of a tiled finish, the client chose the Alkorplan Touch Prestige pool liner from Aquaflex; a minimalist design that evokes a volcanic rock effect. The pool surround and patio have been finished in Basalt tiling which complements the liner design.

The pool liner was cut to the pool’s specification at the client’s premises and fitted perfectly to create a stylish aesthetic. Apart from the convenience of on-site installation, the liner is ideal  because it eliminates any leak potential from unknown issues with the existing pool structure (such as ground movement), is very low-maintenance compared to tiles, for instance, there will be no need for re-grouting in the future and the liner comes with a 15 year warranty, providing peace of mind.

A completely new filtration and water chemistry system featuring the Bayrol Pool Manager dosing system were designed and installed in a newly built summer house-cum-plant room. The pool is heated via the client’s domestic boiler fed to a Bowman heat exchanger which was also supplied and installed by the LSPC team.

This ambitious refurbishment project is proof of what can be achieved with a very dilapidated pool – starting from scratch is not always the answer. By working together on a shared vision and bringing great craftsmanship to the challenge, the damaged old pool has been restored to its former glory for the family and their friends to enjoy.

An exciting transformation of a tired 1970s installation into a pool which is an asset to the property.  The renovation involved filling in the step side and opening up the Roman end to create a more attractive shape to this 4.5 x 9 metre pool.  Over eight weeks, the shell was re-rendered, re-tiled, all fittings and lights replaced and a new plantroom installed.  To finish off, fresh coping stones were laid and the terrace area paved.

Private Communal Pool - Wimbledon, London

The fresh, bright pool and surround finishes along with the new arched wooded ceiling featuring eight skylights have turned the pool complex into a very inviting place with the added therapeutic benefits of a sauna.

The original pool was built in the 1970s and closed in 2008 on safety grounds as it was in a very poor condition after so many years’ service.  This extensive refurbishment contract turned into a complete re-build as the pool shell needed to be re-aligned and re-enforced and the pool hall extended to accommodate a bigger plantroom.

The fresh, bright pool and surround finishes along with the new arched wooded ceiling featuring eight skylights have turned the pool complex into a very inviting place with the added therapeutic benefits of a sauna.

The new high tech equipment provides not just great water and air quality for bathers, but also minimum maintenance and meets the stringent health and safety requirements for public pools.

Before the renovation, only a handful of residents used the facility, and now 75% of the 40 households enjoy the pool several times a week.  The head of the pool committee said: “The project has brought the community of the estate closer together.”

Residents appreciate the improvement to their lifestyles and have also welcomed the increase in the value of their properties arising from the dramatic transformation of the pool and spa complex.

The warm, clean look was achieved by using natural stone on the floor and walls combined with black mirrors and darkly stained wood panels setting of the new mosaic tiles in foggy blue in the pool.

The lighting system enhances the effect – it is dimmable and fitted in recesses in the pool surround to wash down the stone strips.

The air handling system was replaced and was replaced and all air outlet grilles were powder coated to blend in with the colours of the walls.

Outdoor Pool Refurbishment - Wimbledon, London

The tired and damaged outdoor pool underwent an amazing transformation along with the landscaping at this beautiful property. The brief was to create the look and feel of a natural pool in a woodland and this was achieved by retaining the trees around the pool and choosing shades of cream and sand for the glass mosaic interior finishes, resulting in the pool water appearing a clear, light green colour similar to that of a pond.

While undertaking the transformation, the old fashioned deep pool was made shallower to make it safer for younger children as well as adults to use the pool.

Sawn York Stone paving and sandstone coping stones add to the earthy theme and the splendid surrounding flower beds complete the tranquil scene.
